Cape Verde Strengthens Border Controls & Ebola Readiness
Cape Verdean health authorities have begun updating the nation’s Ebola contingency plan and tightening health screenings at international borders as the archipelago bolsters its defenses against the virus.
Heightened Vigilance at Border Entries
Speaking at the 17th National Meeting of Public Health Interns at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) in Lisbon, Ângela Gomes, Cape Verde’s Director-General of Health, expressed growing concern over the potential spread of Ebola. She confirmed that officials are currently “updating the preparation and readiness plan for any eventuality.”
Gomes emphasized that Cape Verde’s deep geographical and economic ties to the African continent necessitate rigorous oversight at ports and airports. “We are carrying out our internal organizational actions and maintaining a direct connection with neighboring countries to update measures as needed,” Gomes said. While controls have been reinforced, she clarified that the country is not currently closing its borders.
Managing Gastrointestinal Risks
Addressing recent reports of Shigella infections within the archipelago, Gomes noted that gastrointestinal outbreaks are common during peak travel seasons when increased movement and large crowds are present. To mitigate these risks, health authorities have reissued hygiene recommendations similar to those popularized during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“From a sanitary perspective, we have further reinforced health inspections,” Gomes stated. She added that there is a strict regulatory framework in place that hotel and tourism entities must follow to ensure public safety.
Strategic Investment in Public Health
The Director-General’s visit to Lisbon also marks a push for stronger bilateral cooperation with the IHMT. The partnership aims to provide advanced training for technical health staff, reflecting Cape Verde’s position that public health is a “strategic and structural global investment.”
By prioritizing readiness and international collaboration, Cape Verde aims to safeguard both its resident population and its vital tourism industry against emerging infectious threats.
