Bárbara Bandeira & Amália Rodrigues: New ‘Lusa’ Duet Revealed

Portuguese pop sensation Bárbara Bandeira has unveiled “Lusa: ato II,” the second chapter of an ambitious musical odyssey celebrating the Portuguese language. The standout feature of the new release is an extraordinary, previously unheard duet with the legendary “Queen of Fado,” Amália Rodrigues.

A Journey Into ‘Portugality’

The 24-year-old singer describes the project as a deep dive into her own heritage and the cultural identity of Portugal. Born to a Portuguese father and a Brazilian mother, Bandeira launched the “Lusa” series in early 2025 to explore the intersection of her roots.

“Act II is about ‘Portugality,'” Bandeira explained in an interview with Lusa news agency. “I think it’s increasingly important, especially for my generation, to ask what it means to be Portuguese and what makes our culture so rich. This process has enriched me immensely, both as an artist and a person.”

Resurrecting a Legend: The Unreleased Amália Track

The centerpiece of the album is the track “Rapariga,” featuring vocal recordings of Amália Rodrigues that have remained hidden for over three decades. Written by Rodrigues and guitarist Carlos Gonçalves, the song was recorded in 1989 but never saw the light of day—until now.

Bárbara Bandeira pursued the recording after hearing rumors of unreleased material held by the label Valentim de Carvalho. After the label’s director heard Bandeira’s vision for the album, he granted her access to the archives.

“To have a song that is being given to the public for the first time in Amália’s voice is so special,” Bandeira said. “When you listen to it, you feel like she is really here. It’s a personal achievement I never thought possible.”

Celebrating the Sounds of Portugal

Beyond the Fado influence, “Lusa: ato II” incorporates diverse traditional elements. The track “Manel” features the haunting harmonies of *cante alentejano* (traditional polyphonic singing from the Alentejo region), while “Marcha” draws inspiration from the historic Sea Procession of Viana do Castelo.

To craft this soundscape, Bandeira collaborated with lyricists Carolina Deslandes and Ella Nor, alongside producers Migz and Ariel, seeking to fuse modern pop with deep-seated Portuguese traditions.

The Future of the ‘Lusa’ Project

The project is set to span four acts, with future installments shifting focus to other corners of the Lusophone world. Bandeira plans to dedicate a chapter to Brazil to explore her maternal roots and intends to honor the Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP), where she already enjoys massive success.

“I’ve learned that these things don’t happen overnight,” Bandeira admitted. “I am prioritizing quality and dedicating myself to each year of this project because the scope is so large.”

Fans can catch the first live performance of the new material on June 6 at the Festas de Oeiras. With two MTV Europe Music Awards for Best Portuguese Act and a history of opening for icons like Coldplay, Bandeira continues to cement her place as a leading voice in contemporary Portuguese music.
