Drug Bust in Cape Verde: 4 Arrested on São Vicente Island
Authorities in Cape Verde have dealt a blow to local narcotics distribution following a series of coordinated raids on the island of São Vicente. The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced Wednesday that four men were caught in the act of drug trafficking during an operation that spanned multiple neighborhoods.
Coordinated Raids Target Local Hubs
The arrests took place on Tuesday across four distinct localities: Fonte Inês, Pedra Rolada, Bela Vista, and Portelinha. Acting on information gathered during an ongoing investigation, the PJ executed four residential search warrants authorized by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
During the sweeps, officers uncovered a significant cache of illicit substances. The haul included 73 “rocks” of a solid white substance and a quantity of white powder, both of which tested positive for cocaine. In addition to the cocaine, authorities seized nine portions of hashish and a small amount of cannabis.
Suspects Face Judicial Interrogation
Beyond the narcotics, investigators confiscated several mobile phones, varying amounts of cash, and other items believed to be linked to the trafficking operation. The four suspects, all Cape Verdean nationals aged between 25 and 35, were immediately taken into custody.
Court Mandates Preventive Detention
Following their initial judicial interrogation, the court determined the immediate future of the four men. Two of the suspects have been ordered into preventive detention as they await trial. The remaining two individuals were released under court supervision, with the requirement to report periodically to the authorities.
The operation marks the latest effort by Cape Verdean law enforcement to curb the flow of narcotics through the archipelago’s urban centers.
