Cape Verde Court of Auditors Adopts Gender Equality Seal
Cape Verde’s Court of Auditors has officially launched its participation in the Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions program, taking a significant step toward embedding inclusivity into the oversight of national finances. This move makes it the second public body in the country to adopt the standard, following the Ministry of Finance.
A Regional Push for Transparency
The initiative is spearheaded by Pro PALOP-TL (Phase III), a collaborative program funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The program aims to modernize organizational management across Portuguese-speaking African countries and Timor-Leste by integrating a gender-sensitive lens into public finance and governance.
By joining the program, the Court of Auditors intends to institutionalize a “gender perspective” within its internal culture and its external auditing functions. This evolution is expected to bolster transparency and ensure that public spending serves all citizens more equitably.
Building Expertise and Benchmarking Progress
The implementation began with a two-day workshop in Praia, where technical staff and high-level decision-makers are receiving specialized training. Participants are studying successful case studies from both the Cape Verdean Ministry of Finance and the Federal Court of Accounts of Brazil, which serves as a regional benchmark for these practices.
The Gender Equality Committee
As part of the rollout, the Court will officially swear in its new Gender Equality Committee. This dedicated body will be responsible for overseeing the transformation of the institution’s internal policies and ensuring that economic governance remains accountable to international standards of equality.
Through this program, Cape Verde continues to position itself as a regional leader in economic governance, utilizing international partnerships to create more inclusive and representative public institutions.
