Santiago

As the largest of Cape Verde’s islands, Santiago is also the archipelago’s most populous. Its name “Ilha de Santiago” means “Island of St. James” and it is home to around 290,000 people. Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, is also located here. More than half of the country’s inhabitants live in Santiago.

Being a volcanic island, Santiago, with 991 km², has two volcanic mountain ranges, the highest point being Pico de Antónia, with a height of 1,394 meters. Among them are wide valleys with impressive vegetation for such a dry country. This makes Santiago the most varied island in the country in terms of landscape.

Nature lovers in particular, but also history lovers, will get their money’s worth here. The island’s former capital, the city of Ribeira Grande de Santiago, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, is definitely worth a visit. The city is protected by a large fortress, a reminder of Portuguese colonial rule.

But Praia, in particular, also attracts tourists, as it is in fact the center of the country. There’s always something going on here and the old town impresses with its colonial architecture and lively food market. From the Bateira fortress, you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the city and the sea.
Santiago also offers several swimming opportunities and numerous exciting hikes. Cape Verde’s largest island is definitely worth a visit.
