Man Arrested in Boa Vista for Revenge Porn and Blackmail
Law enforcement authorities on the island of Boa Vista have apprehended a 31-year-old man as he attempted to flee the island following allegations of a campaign of blackmail and revenge pornography directed at a foreign national.
The Arrest at Sal Rei Port
The Cape Verdean Judicial Police (PJ) announced on Sunday that the suspect was intercepted at the port of Sal Rei on Saturday. According to officials, the man was in the process of attempting to leave the island by sea when he was detained. The arrest was the culmination of a high-priority, two-month investigation coordinated between the PJ and the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The suspect, originally from the island of São Vicente but residing in Boa Vista, faces multiple charges, including aggravated gender-based violence, blackmail, and the distribution of non-consensual intimate imagery (revenge pornography). Authorities revealed they had been monitoring the man closely, executing several search and seizure warrants prior to his attempted escape.
Evidence Seized
At the time of the arrest, the police seized a scooter the suspect was driving. Investigators believe the vehicle belongs to the victim. The identity and nationality of the foreign woman targeted in the case have not been disclosed to protect her privacy.
Court Mandates Travel Ban
Following his arrest, the defendant was presented to the Boa Vista District Court for initial interrogation. While the suspect awaits further legal proceedings, the court has imposed several restrictive measures.
The magistrate ordered the man to report to authorities bi-weekly and issued a strict “stay-at-home” order for the island, officially prohibiting him from leaving Boa Vista. Additionally, the suspect is barred from making any form of contact with the victim as the investigation continues.
