Cocaine Bust in São Vicente: Three Suspects Jailed
Authorities in Cape Verde have dealt a significant blow to local drug distribution networks following a targeted raid in São Vicente. Three men are now in custody after a joint operation by the Judiciary Police (PJ) and the National Police uncovered cocaine and cash in the Bela Vista neighborhood.
The Raid and Seizures
The operation took place last Friday night, spearheaded by the Mindelo Criminal Investigation Department (DICM) through its specialized Narcotics Investigation Brigade (BITE). Executing court-ordered search warrants, officers stormed a residence where they discovered 84 individual doses of cocaine packaged for sale.
In addition to the illicit drugs, police seized an undisclosed amount of cash and several other items deemed critical to the ongoing investigation. The authorities have not yet specified the total value of the items recovered.
Suspects and Legal Proceedings
The three suspects, all Cape Verdean nationals, range in age from 20 to 45. Two of the men are originally from São Vicente, while the third is a native of Santiago Island. Following their arrest, the men were brought before a magistrate for their initial judicial interrogation.
Citing the severity of the charges and the evidence presented, the court applied the most stringent coercive measure available: preventive detention. The defendants will be held at the São Vicente Central Prison while the legal case against them proceeds.
Commitment to Public Safety
The Judiciary Police emphasized that this operation is part of a broader, intensified strategy to dismantle drug trafficking rings across the island. Investigations are still active as authorities work to identify other potential links in the distribution chain.
This crackdown highlights the ongoing efforts of Cape Verdean law enforcement to curb the narcotics trade and enhance security within residential communities like Bela Vista.
