CVMA 2024 takes place this Saturday, June 1st
This year’s 13th edition of the CVMA (Cabo Verde Music Awards) gala coincides with June 1, International Children’s Day, a fact that the organization has promised will also be marked at the gala.
According to the organizers, the gala, which will take place in the Port of Praia, “will be another night of consecration for national music, in a “great gala as the CVMAs have become accustomed to in Cape Verde”.
“The CVMA 2024 will reward musical releases between January 1 and December 31, 2023″ and the nominees will once again be selected by a multidisciplinary academy representing various sectors of music.
In terms of award nominations, Assol Garcia, Djodje and Soraia Ramos are the most nominated artists. Djodje has four nominations, the majority of which are with Neyna, and Assol Garcia and Soraia Ramos also have four nominations. A total of 31 artists are nominated out of a total of 61 nominations. In 10 categories the CVMA Academy has nominated 4 nominees and in the remaining 7 categories there are 3 nominees.
According to the organization, the choice of nominees is the result of intense and exhaustive work by the members of the CVMA Academy, who analyzed a list of hundreds of musical themes and voted individually.
The categories to be awarded are: song of the year, album of the year, popular song of the year, female and male performer of the year, funaná of the year, coladeira of the year, traditional song of the year, kizomba of the year, hip hop of the year, afrobeats/ afrohouse of the year, collaboration of the year, other rhythms of the year, music video of the year, artist on stage of the year and revelation artist of the year.
The last edition of the Cabo Verde Music Awards took place on June 3, 2023 in the city of Santa Maria, Sal Island, the first time the event was held outside Praia.
This year, at the gala, the band os Tubarões will receive the CVMA 2024 Career Award. The Career Award is the highest award presented by the Official Cape Verdean Music Award and recognizes musicians, artists and/or bands whose career has clearly contributed to the growth of the country’s musical heritage.
The Cabo Verde Music Awards recognize the importance of the band Os Tubarões, who have been ambassadors for Cape Verdean music for over four decades.
They also recognize the band’s role in the country’s socio-cultural panorama, making music a powerful instrument of intervention and affirmation of Cape Verdean culture, before and after Independence – “the longevity of Os Tubarões and the fact that they remain an active band to this day, with a glorious past, but also with a strong presence today and the prospect of future continuity, make the band one of the greatest success stories in national music”.
This year, the CVMA 2024 social responsibility project is associating artists and children with the cause of climate change12, an important initiative to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change.
