Cape Verde Weather: Strong Winds and 5-Meter Waves Forecast

Weather conditions across the Cape Verde archipelago are set to deteriorate significantly starting Tuesday, April 7, as the intensification of the Azores High brings powerful winds and dangerous sea conditions to the region.

The National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG) issued a warning on Monday, stating that the archipelago will face a period of atmospheric instability lasting through Saturday. Meteorologists expect the shift to begin Tuesday morning, with sustained wind speeds reaching between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour. Occasional gusts could peak at 60 kilometers per hour.

Dangerous Surf and Maritime Warnings

While the winds will pick up early in the week, the most severe maritime impact is expected to hit on Wednesday. The INMG forecasts heavy swells arriving from the northwest and northeast, with waves reaching heights of 2.5 to 5.0 meters.

The deteriorating sea conditions will pose a particular risk to coastal areas exposed to the north and northwest. Additionally, inter-island maritime sectors in the eastern regions are expected to experience significant turbulence, potentially impacting local travel and fishing activities.

The INMG stated that it is closely monitoring the evolving weather patterns and will provide regular updates as the situation develops. Residents and maritime operators are advised to stay informed and exercise caution near coastal areas throughout the week.
