Cape Verde Signs €17M Deal for New Inter-Island Vessel

Cape Verde’s Port Authority (Enapor) has officially signed a €17 million contract with a Chinese consortium to build a custom roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel, a move designed to transform inter-island transport and strengthen the nation’s logistics network.

A Vessel Tailored for the Islands

The new ship, measuring approximately 75 meters in length, is being developed under the strategic guidance of the Cape Verdean government. Unlike standard vessels, this ship is specifically designed for the unique maritime conditions of the archipelago, prioritizing operational versatility and modern technical solutions.

Once operational, the vessel will have the capacity to carry up to 300 passengers. Its cargo deck is designed for flexibility, capable of transporting either 60 light vehicles or 12 heavy-duty trucks, making it a critical asset for both tourism and domestic trade.

International Partnership and Construction

The contract was awarded following an international public tender to a consortium of two Chinese firms: Shenzhen Truewill and Taizhou Changlong. The ship will be constructed at a private shipyard in Pinghu, China.

To ensure the project meets national standards, the construction phase will be monitored by a specialized team of supervisors from Cape Verde. The vessel is expected to be completed within 21 to 24 months once the final execution plan is validated.

Driving Economic Integration

Enapor emphasized that this €17 million investment is more than just a purchase; it is a vital step toward territorial integration. By improving the reliability and capacity of maritime links between the islands, the government aims to revitalize the national economy and ensure smoother movement for citizens and cargo alike.
