Cape Verde Beats Finland in FIFA Series Ahead of World Cup
The Cape Verde national football team secured a morale-boosting victory over Finland in a penalty shootout on Sunday, gaining vital momentum as they prepare for their historic first-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
Competing in the second edition of the FIFA Series in Auckland, New Zealand, the “Blue Sharks” recovered from a first-half deficit to draw 1-1 in regulation time before showing superior nerves from the penalty spot.
Finland, who will not be participating in the 2026 World Cup, took the lead just before the interval through midfielder Naatan Skyttä. However, Cape Verde struck back in the 67th minute when defender Kelvin Pires found the net, assisted by Benfica full-back Sidny Cabral.
Clinical from the Spot
As the match moved to penalties, Pedro “Bubista” Brito’s side stayed composed. Despite a miss from Estrela da Amadora’s Jovane Cabral, Cape Verde emerged victorious as Finland’s Topi Keskinen and Jaakko Oksanen both failed to convert their attempts.
The match served as a crucial warm-up for the island nation, which featured a strong lineup including Farense midfielder Yannick Semedo. The FIFA Series is a friendly initiative designed to provide competitive international matches for teams across different confederations. The 2026 edition has expanded significantly, featuring 36 men’s teams across eight series and 12 women’s teams across three series.
Looking Ahead to the World Cup
Cape Verde’s victory in New Zealand—where they are joined by the host nation and Chile in this series—is a precursor to their biggest challenge yet. In June, they will travel to North America for their World Cup debut, where they face a daunting task in Group H.
The Blue Sharks will open their Group H campaign against 2010 champions Spain on June 15. They will then face South American giants Uruguay on June 21, before concluding the group stage against Saudi Arabia on June 26. The 2026 World Cup is set to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
