Culture and people

Cape Verde has 450,000 inhabitants and offers an exciting mix of Portuguese and African cultures. The official language is Portuguese and the colloquial language is Cape Verdean Creole, Krioulo, which is spoken in different variants on the island. Popular festivals and music also reflect the cultural mix that characterizes Cape Verde.

Cape Verdeans are considered to be particularly hospitable and open, with no racial boundaries or discrimination. Women and men have equal rights and this is a way of life. As many Cape Verdeans, mostly men, work abroad to support their families, special forms of coexistence have developed.

Many of the people who work abroad return to Cape Verde, especially at Christmas, which means that the planes and ferries are full.
