Public transport / cabs / car rental
Public transport / cabs / car rental. To rent a car in Cape Verde, you must have a driving license and an international driving permit. These can be requested from the General Directorate of Traffic or from many car clubs.
Only a limited number of rental cars are available in Cape Verde, so it’s worth booking your vehicle well in advance. Road conditions often leave a lot to be desired, so a four-wheel drive vehicle is definitely recommended and, on some islands, even mandatory.
Public transportation in Cape Verde is based on shared cabs, or rentals. These operate within cities and also between towns, and have fixed prices for journeys. If you don’t want to drive, you can often hire one privately.
In big cities, there are also normal cabs, each with a specific color. This makes it possible to distinguish between official and unofficial cabs.
Ferries, boats and domestic flights operate between the islands. It should be noted that both ships and planes cannot always keep to their schedules due to weather conditions.
