Music Documentary Festival Returns to Angra do Heroísmo

The Angra do Heroísmo Documentary Film Festival is set to return to Terceira Island in the Azores for its second edition, this time placing the spotlight on the transformative power of sound. Titled “When Music Tells Stories,” the festival will showcase three acclaimed documentaries that explore the intersections of melody, activism, and identity.

A Tribute to the Barefoot Diva

The festival kicks off on October 30 with Cesária Évora, a documentary by director Ana Sofia Fonseca. The film offers an intimate look at the legendary Cape Verdean singer, tracing her meteoric rise from the streets of Mindelo to the world’s most prestigious stages.

Organizers from the Cine-Clube da Ilha Terceira (CCIT) noted that the film utilizes rare and previously unreleased archival footage to paint a portrait of the woman behind the “Barefoot Diva” persona. It explores themes of the Cape Verdean diaspora and the singer’s enduring cultural legacy.

Lennon and Ono: Art Meets Activism

On October 31, the festival shifts its focus to 1970s New York with One to One: John & Yoko. Directed by Kevin Macdonald and Sam Rice-Edwards, this 2024 documentary captures a pivotal era in the lives of John Lennon and Yoko Ono during the height of the Vietnam War and the Nixon presidency.

Centered around the historic 1972 “One to One” benefit concert, the film uses restored footage and personal archives to examine the couple’s unique blend of music and radical political activism. It serves as a reminder of how art can become a tool for civic intervention during turbulent times.

Britpop Legends and the Bonds of Friendship

Closing the festival on November 1 is Blur: To The End. Directed by Toby L., the documentary follows the 2023 reunion of the four members of the iconic English band Blur as they prepared for their triumphant return to London’s Wembley Stadium.

The film is described by organizers as more than a simple band biography; it is a poignant reflection on aging within the music industry, the passage of time, and the enduring resilience of long-term friendship.

Portraits of Eras and Societies

According to the CCIT, this year’s selection was curated to go beyond biographical facts. Each film serves as a window into a specific era, addressing universal themes such as creative resilience and the struggle for identity. By choosing music as the guiding thread, the festival aims to show how rhythm and song can document the history of the human experience.
