Cape Verde Deploys Eye Specialists to Sal Amid Pink Eye Surge

Health authorities in Cape Verde are scrambling to contain a massive outbreak of conjunctivitis on the island of Sal, the nation’s primary tourist hub. The Ministry of Health reported today that approximately 1,000 cases of “pink eye” have been recorded in just one week, following what officials described as an “atypical surge.”

Medical Reinforcements Deployed

In response to the rapid spread, the Ministry has deployed a specialized team of ophthalmologists to the island. Led by National Director of Health Ana Paula Santos, the specialists will join local medical professionals to bolster the island’s diagnostic and treatment capacity.

While the sudden spike in cases has strained local resources, the Ministry of Health maintains that the situation is currently “under control” and that health officials are closely monitoring the evolution of the outbreak.

High Transmission Risks

Conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball, is highly contagious. Health authorities are urging residents and visitors on Sal to practice strict hygiene to prevent further spread. Recommended measures include:

  • Frequent hand washing with soap and water.
  • Avoiding touching or rubbing the eyes.
  • Refraining from sharing personal items such as towels, pillowcases, makeup, glasses, or eye drops.

When to Seek Care

The Ministry has issued a stern warning against the use of non-prescription medications or home remedies, which can exacerbate the condition. Patients are advised to seek immediate professional medical attention at a health center or clinic if they experience severe pain, intense sensitivity to light, or any loss of vision.

Sal island is the heart of Cape Verde’s tourism industry, and officials are working to ensure the outbreak does not further disrupt the region’s activities.
