Cape Verde Braces for Tropical Depression and Heavy Rain
Cape Verde is bracing for a period of severe weather as a tropical depression forms off the West African coast, threatening the archipelago with intense winds and heavy rainfall beginning Thursday.
Potential Tropical Storm Brewing
According to the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC), a tropical wave is currently moving off the coast of Africa. Forecasters expect a low-pressure area to develop quickly, likely intensifying into a short-lived tropical depression by Thursday or Friday.
“Populations and entities in the Cape Verde islands should monitor the progress of this system,” the NHC warned in an advisory issued Monday. The center noted that the archipelago could see significant wind gusts and sustained periods of heavy rain through the end of the week.
A History of Deadly Floods
While Cape Verde is primarily known for its arid climate, the islands are increasingly vulnerable to sudden, violent storms and flash floods. The recent history of the archipelago underscores the danger these weather systems pose to life and infrastructure.
In August 2025, Storm Erin devastated the island of São Vicente, claiming nine lives. Just months later, in November, flash floods caused another fatality on the island of Santiago. Local authorities are urging residents to stay informed as the new system approaches.
Climate Change Fueling Extreme Weather
The looming depression comes amid a global trend of intensifying maritime weather patterns. Data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) indicates that 2025 was likely the second or third hottest year on record. Experts warn that rising ocean temperatures act as fuel for such storms, leading to more frequent and severe weather events across the Atlantic.
