iib West Africa & AMP Partner to Empower Cape Verde Diaspora

The Intercontinental Investment Bank (iib) West Africa and the Association of People from Maio in Portugal (AMP) are set to sign a landmark memorandum of understanding in Lisbon today. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening ties between the Cape Verdean financial sector and its vibrant diaspora community in Portugal.

Bridging the Gap Between Banking and Community

The partnership aims to move beyond a standard institutional relationship by bringing iib West Africa—which is headquartered in Cape Verde—directly into the lives of the diaspora. According to a statement released to Lusa, the bank intends to create new opportunities for cooperation across social, educational, cultural, and financial sectors.

By establishing this link, iib West Africa hopes to better understand and serve the specific needs of Cape Verdeans living abroad, fostering a sense of connection to their home archipelago through practical support and accessible services.

Support for Social and Educational Initiatives

A core component of the agreement is the bank’s commitment to backing AMP’s established social and community projects. Key initiatives set to benefit from the partnership include:

  • Mão Solidária and NOS CASA: Social welfare programs aimed at community support.
  • Kapacita+: Focused on skill development and capacity building.
  • Mostra Bu Sorriso: An initiative focused on community well-being and health.

Beyond direct project support, the bank will spearhead financial literacy efforts. Through a series of workshops, lectures, and seminars, iib West Africa plans to empower the diaspora with the financial tools and knowledge necessary for long-term economic stability.

A Commitment to Culture and Inclusion

The agreement, which will be signed at the Cape Verde Cultural Center in Lisbon, also explores the development of tailored financial products designed for the unique circumstances of the diaspora. Furthermore, the partnership will prioritize employability and inclusion, alongside initiatives that celebrate and preserve Cape Verdean culture and identity within Portugal.

This strategic alliance signals a growing trend of African financial institutions actively engaging with their overseas populations to drive both social impact and economic growth.
