Mação Boosts Digital Learning as Student Enrollment Rises
The new school year kicked off in Mação on Monday with two significant milestones: a boost in student enrollment and a major municipal investment to bridge the digital divide. For the next three years, every student and teacher in the municipality will have free, full access to the “Escola Virtual” (Virtual School) digital learning platform.
A Digital Toolbox for All
The initiative, funded by the Mação City Council, provides 671 students and their teachers at the Verde Horizonte School Group with a suite of digital content, including instructional videos, interactive exercises, and study tools. The platform covers everyone from preschool through secondary school, including vocational tracks.
Mayor José Fernando Martins emphasized that while the platform is a powerful resource, it is intended to supplement rather than replace traditional learning. “This does not replace books or workbooks,” Martins stated. “Instead, it provides everyone with a ‘toolbox’ that was previously only accessible to some.”
The three-year investment is estimated at €28,500, roughly €9,500 per year.
Growth Against Demographic Trends
In a region facing significant aging—where National Institute of Statistics (INE) data shows roughly four elderly residents for every young person—Mação is celebrating a modest but vital increase in its student body. The district welcomes seven more students than last year, bringing the total to 671.
The student population also reflects growing diversity. Nearly 14% of the student body (92 students) are foreign nationals representing 13 different countries, with the largest groups arriving from Brazil, Angola, and Cape Verde.
Infrastructure and Future Planning
As the academic year begins, the municipality is looking ahead to €2.5 million in planned school renovations. Major projects include:
- A significant overhaul of the Mação Secondary School, including a specialized workshop for Mechatronics students and improved transit areas for student drop-offs.
- The expansion of the Mação primary school and kindergarten with a new classroom block.
- The construction of a new pavilion at the Cardigos school site, where repairs from “Depression Kristin” damage have recently been completed.
Holistic Student Support
Beyond technology and infrastructure, Education Councilor Vanda Serra highlighted several new initiatives aimed at student well-being. These include a “school fruit” nutrition program, the revitalization of primary school libraries to promote reading, and a dedicated focus on mental health and emotional management.
While the school year is underway for most, secondary school students are scheduled to begin classes on September 21. This slight delay follows a national adjustment to the calendar caused by a special exam period for secondary students.
