Cape Verde Aid Package for Fogo Bus Tragedy Families
The families of the 25 victims killed in a devastating bus crash on the island of Fogo will receive a compensation payment of 100,000 escudos (€907) for each life lost, Cape Verdean authorities announced. The financial aid is part of a comprehensive support package coordinated between the local municipality of São Filipe and the national government.
Direct Financial Aid and Ongoing Support
Mayor of São Filipe, Nuías Silva, clarified to reporters that the monetary support is calculated per victim rather than per household. “This support is not per family; it is per victim,” Silva explained, noting that households mourning multiple relatives will receive a corresponding multi-part payment. The funds are currently being processed and transferred to the victims’ families.
Beyond the immediate cash injection, the government has already distributed basic food baskets to the affected families. A specialized crisis office has also been established to provide psychological counseling and mental health support to those grieving.
For survivors who were airlifted to the capital city of Praia for emergency care, authorities have guaranteed accommodation and meals at a facility near the Agostinho Neto Hospital to ensure they receive continuous monitoring during their recovery.
Honoring the Deceased and Rebuilding Lives
The municipality has taken full responsibility for the funeral arrangements, purchasing all necessary coffins and exempting families from burial plot fees. These plots will be granted in perpetuity, and the city plans to construct granite or marble tombs to serve as lasting memorials.
Mayor Silva emphasized that the government’s mission extends beyond the immediate mourning period. Plans are already in motion to assist families with home renovations and the creation of new income-generating activities to ensure long-term stability. Implementation of these projects is scheduled to begin following the one-month memorial mass.
“No matter how much we intervene, we cannot bring back these lives, but we can help minimize the suffering of those who survived and honor the memory of those who departed,” Silva stated.
A “Miracle” and a Call for Road Safety
The accident occurred last Saturday in Campanas de Cima, Santa Catarina do Fogo, when a bus veered off the road and plunged 50 meters down a steep ravine. The crash claimed 25 lives—mostly students and young people—and left 13 others injured. The Mayor described the survival of the 13 passengers as a “true miracle.”
In response to the tragedy, which prompted two days of national mourning, Mayor Silva has proposed that September 5th be designated as a national day for reflection on road safety and accident prevention. Authorities are also considering the erection of a monument at the crash site featuring the names of the victims.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. Estradas de Cabo Verde, the state-owned company responsible for the national road network, is currently on-site assessing the road conditions at the scene of the tragedy.
