Mário Semedo Elected First Cape Verdean President of WAFU-A
In a historic moment for Cape Verdean sports diplomacy, Mário Semedo, the President of the Cape Verdean Football Federation (FCF), has been elected to lead the West African Football Union – Zone A (WAFU-A). The decision was finalized during the organization’s Elective General Assembly held this Sunday in The Gambia.
A Historic First for Cape Verde
Semedo’s election marks the first time a representative from Cape Verde has ascended to the presidency of this regional football powerhouse. He succeeds Lamine Badjo of The Gambia, who stepped down following the conclusion of his term.
WAFU-A is a critical regional body under the Confederation of African Football (CAF), overseeing the development and competition of nine national associations: Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.
The New Leadership Team
Semedo will be supported by a newly formed executive committee. Babadi Kamara of Sierra Leone was elected as the first vice-president, while Mali’s Mahazou (widely known as Baba Cisset) will serve as second vice-president.
National Pride and International Recognition
The news was met with high praise back home. José Maria Neves, the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, hailed the election as a “great victory” for the island nation. In a statement shared on social media, the Head of State congratulated Semedo, emphasizing that his new role reflects his tireless efforts to elevate Cape Verdean football on the global stage.
“Cape Verde is grateful for and honors men who bring greatness and meaning to our presence in the world,” President Neves stated, noting that Semedo’s leadership resonates both nationally and internationally.
Looking Ahead
This new international appointment adds to Semedo’s significant responsibilities; he will continue to serve as the head of the Cape Verdean Football Federation, a position he is slated to hold until his current mandate expires in 2029.
As the leader of WAFU-A, Semedo will be tasked with steering one of West Africa’s two main football zones, ensuring the growth and competitive excellence of the sub-region’s national teams.
