Cape Verde Vows Deep Probe Into Fogo Bus Tragedy
Following a devastating bus crash on the island of Fogo that claimed 25 lives, Cape Verdean Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho has promised a “serious and profound” investigation into the disaster. The probe will scrutinize road construction standards, assessment protocols, and inspection failures that may have contributed to the tragedy.
The accident occurred Saturday night in the locality of Campanas de Cima, Santa Catarina do Fogo. A bus carrying 39 people—mostly students returning from an excursion—veered off the road and plunged 30 meters down a steep embankment. The Ministry of Health confirmed that the victims were predominantly children and adolescents.
Government Vows “Concrete Measures”
“We know the role of assessment and inspection in Cape Verdean society. What is lacking is action and taking concrete measures, and we are going to do that,” Prime Minister Carvalho stated during a visit to the island. He emphasized that the Road Institute of Cape Verde will conduct a full technical evaluation of the site, focusing on road characteristics, route safety, and mobility conditions.
Carvalho insisted that the government’s response would go beyond optics. “This event will by no means go unnoticed. We did not come to Fogo just to show our faces,” he said, adding that the goal is to act quickly to “correct, anticipate, and prevent” future catastrophes.
A Nation in Mourning
The tragedy has left 25 dead and 14 injured. According to Health Minister Lúcio Miranda, 13 survivors—ranging in age from six to 16—remain hospitalized at the São Francisco de Assis Regional Hospital. One survivor was discharged Monday.
President José Maria Neves joined the Prime Minister in Fogo to attend the funerals of 18 victims. The President called for immediate psychological support for the grieving families, describing the loss of so many young lives as an “immense tragedy.”
Calls for Stricter Road Safety
The Mayor of São Filipe, Nuías Silva, has joined the chorus of officials demanding a rigorous investigation. Local leadership is calling for a total overhaul of road safety measures to ensure that a transport disaster of this scale never happens again.
As the nation observes a period of mourning, the government faces increasing pressure to transform its promised “profound analysis” into tangible infrastructure improvements on the archipelago’s rugged island roads.
