Portugal PS Reacts to Tragic Cape Verde Bus Crash: 25 Dead
Portugal’s Socialist Party (PS) has joined international leaders in expressing “profound sadness and dismay” following a catastrophic bus accident on Fogo Island, Cape Verde, that claimed at least 25 lives, including several children.
A Community in Mourning
In a formal statement released via social media, the PS extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and the broader Cape Verdean community. “In this moment of immense pain, the PS sends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims,” the party stated, adding that they stand in solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.
The crash occurred on Saturday in the town of Campanas de Cima, within the municipality of Santa Catarina do Fogo. According to the São Filipe Municipal Council, the bus was transporting students on a field trip when it veered off the road, plummeting approximately 30 meters down a steep embankment.
Dozens Injured as Rescue Efforts Continue
Beyond the confirmed fatalities, official sources told Lusa that 18 people remain hospitalized. The injured are young, ranging in age from six to 11 years old. Four of the survivors are currently listed in serious condition.
The PS statement also offered wishes for a “speedy recovery” to the injured and praised the tireless efforts of emergency responders and healthcare professionals providing aid on the ground.
Official Response in Cape Verde
The tragedy has prompted a wave of national mourning in Cape Verde. President José Maria Neves and Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho both took to social media to offer their condolences and express their government’s sorrow over the devastating loss of life.
In response to the scale of the disaster, the local municipality has declared two days of official mourning. Local leaders held an extraordinary meeting on Sunday to coordinate support and resources for the victims’ families during this crisis.
