NRP Álvares Cabral Deploys for West Africa Security Mission
The Portuguese Navy frigate NRP Álvares Cabral set sail from Lisbon on Tuesday, embarking on a multi-month security and diplomacy mission spanning the West African coastline. The deployment, part of the “Open Sea Initiative 2026,” will see the vessel visit 15 countries to bolster maritime safety and strengthen international ties.
A Mission of Security and Diplomacy
Designed to safeguard Portuguese interests while contributing to global maritime security, the NRP Álvares Cabral will conduct a wide range of operations, including patrolling, surveillance, and monitoring. The mission aims to address collective defense challenges and ensure the protection of human life at sea in one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
According to a statement from the Navy, the mission focuses on fulfilling international commitments to the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and supporting the European Union’s Coordinated Maritime Presences (CMP) framework in the Gulf of Guinea.
Extensive Regional Reach
Under the command of Commander Nelson Santos Martins, the ship and its 188-person crew will visit ports across the region. The itinerary includes Cape Verde, Ghana, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, and a final stop in Spain.
Beyond patrolling, the crew will participate in the SWAIMS project (Support to West Africa Integrated Maritime Security), an initiative funded by the EU and managed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Training the Next Generation
The mission also serves as a floating classroom. From now until August 22, the vessel will host an “instructional voyage” for third- and fourth-year cadets from the Naval School, providing future officers with vital hands-on experience in international operations.
During a departure ceremony at the Alfeite Naval Base, Admiral Jorge Nobre de Sousa, Chief of Staff of the Navy, hailed the deployment as a cornerstone of Portugal’s foreign policy. “Over the years, this mission has allowed us to strengthen maritime security, tighten cooperation ties, and deepen trust with friendly countries along the West African coast,” the Admiral stated.
