World Cup 2026: Sidny Cabral Wins Goal of the Tournament
FIFA announced today that Cape Verdean international Sidny Cabral’s stunning strike against Argentina has been voted the Best Goal of the 2026 World Cup. The historic finish, which came during Cape Verde’s debut appearance on football’s biggest stage, captivated fans worldwide in a tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
A Goal for the Ages
The winner was decided by a popular vote on FIFA’s official website. Fans chose Cabral’s effort from a shortlist of 12 spectacular goals selected by the organization. The match-defining moment occurred in the 12th minute of extra time during an intense round-of-32 clash against Argentina.
Cabral, a 23-year-old full-back who plays for Trabzonspor, unleashed a precision right-footed shot that curled into the top corner, leaving legendary goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez with no chance. Although Cape Verde ultimately lost the match 3-2, the goal cemented their status as the tournament’s ultimate underdog success story.
“Simply Surreal”
“It was simply surreal,” Cabral told FIFA while reflecting on the moment. “Scoring a goal of that quality on a stage like the World Cup is special. It’s a moment that stays with you forever in your career.”
The Rotterdam-born former Benfica player insisted the strike was no accident. “It was the second time I’ve scored a goal like that… it wasn’t something completely new for me,” he said. He expressed deep gratitude for the global support, calling the award “a source of enormous pride and a recognition that any player would like to have.”
Cape Verde’s Historic Run
The award serves as the crowning achievement of a fairytale campaign for the island nation. Cape Verde emerged from the group stage undefeated, despite facing giants Spain and Uruguay, as well as Saudi Arabia. Their performance against eventual victors Argentina further proved they belonged among the world’s elite.
“The most gratifying thing is realizing that, after the World Cup, many more people have come to know our country,” Cabral emphasized. “I feel there is an enormous affection for Cape Verde, for our people, and our players. You can’t buy that respect and recognition.”
Beating the Giants
Cabral’s effort beat out several of the game’s biggest icons for the top honor. The shortlist included world-class finishes from Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, and Jude Bellingham. Other notable nominees included Japan’s Daizen Maeda and Spain’s Ferran Torres.
Looking ahead, Cabral believes this is only the start for his nation. “This is just the beginning,” the defender warned. “There is a new generation growing up and we will come back even stronger.”
