Cape Verde Coach Gifts World Cup Jersey to Portugal President
In a moment that captured the spirit of Cape Verdean hospitality, national football coach Pedro Brito ‘Bubista’ surprised Portuguese President António José Seguro with a special gift on Wednesday: the match jersey of goalkeeper ‘Vozinha’ (Josimar Dias), one of the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup.
A Celebration of ‘Morabeza’
“I wasn’t expecting this. Extraordinary—this is the true ‘morabeza’,” President Seguro remarked, using the local term for the archipelago’s legendary hospitality. The exchange took place in the historic Cidade Velha during a book fair held as part of the President’s state visit to the islands.
The Cape Verdean national team, known as the “Blue Sharks,” captured global attention during their recent World Cup debut. The team earned accolades for a stunning draw against reigning champions Spain and a valiant 3-2 loss to Argentina in the Round of 16. Spotting Bubista in the crowd, Seguro called for a round of applause, stating, “You are the one who deserves a great salute.”
The Spirit of the Blue Sharks
Holding the goalkeeper’s jersey, the Portuguese President praised the team’s performance as an example of the “purity of sport.” He questioned the coach about the secret behind the team’s seamless “tuning” and discipline on the world stage.
“It is the definition of our identity,” Bubista replied. “We clearly showed what our people are about, seeking to do everything with great unity. The secret is hard work; it is what defines the Cape Verdean people—always working to overcome difficulties.”
The success of the Blue Sharks has been a recurring theme throughout the diplomatic visit. On Tuesday, Seguro presented Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves with a commemorative glass sculpture in the shape of a Blue Shark to honor the team’s historic run.
Strengthening Diplomatic Ties
The jersey exchange served as a high-spirited interlude in a busy diplomatic schedule. President Seguro is concluding his visit on the island of Boa Vista, where he is scheduled to attend the V International Conference on the Ocean Decade. The conference focuses on “Blue Economy: Sustainable Paths,” reflecting the shared maritime interests of Portugal and Cape Verde.
Before returning home, the President’s itinerary includes visiting the Hemodialysis Center at Agostinho Neto Hospital—a facility supported by Portuguese cooperation—and touring Techpark, Praia’s burgeoning technology hub. He will conclude his trip with a reception for the Portuguese community at the Portuguese School in the capital city.
