Portugal President Receives Cape Verde’s Highest Honor
Portuguese President António José Seguro is set to receive Cape Verde’s highest honor, the First Degree of the Order of Amílcar Cabral, as he begins a high-profile state visit to the archipelago today.
The three-day visit, running through Thursday, marks Seguro’s first official state trip to Cape Verde. According to a presidential decree published in the nation’s official bulletin, the visit represents a “moment of great political and symbolic significance,” aimed at strengthening the long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations.
A Legacy of Cooperation
The Order of Amílcar Cabral is reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to freedom, democracy, and human dignity. Cape Verdean officials cited Seguro’s lifelong dedication to public service and his “unwavering commitment” to deepening the ties between Lisbon and Praia as the primary reasons for the distinction.
The decree further highlighted Seguro’s career as being defined by the defense of “social justice, solidarity, and cooperation between peoples,” values that align with the spirit of the award’s namesake, the revolutionary leader Amílcar Cabral.
Expanding the Strategic Partnership
While the history between Portugal and Cape Verde is rooted in centuries of shared heritage, the current diplomatic focus is firmly on the future. The two governments are actively expanding their collaboration into modern critical sectors, including:
- The blue economy and climate action
- Digital transition and innovation
- Science and human resource qualification
- Sustainable development
The Visit Itinerary
President Seguro is scheduled to arrive at 5:30 PM local time. His first official act will be a meeting with Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves at the Presidential Palace in Praia. The meeting is expected to set the stage for several days of bilateral talks intended to elevate the relationship between the two states to a new strategic level.
