Odemira Hosts Sete Sóis Sete Luas Festival: Global Arts Hub

The Odemira municipality is set to become a vibrant crossroads of international traditions as the Sete Sóis Sete Luas Festival kicks off today. Running through September 7, the festival promises a sensory journey through the Mediterranean and the Lusophone world, blending diverse music, contemporary circus, authentic gastronomy, and the raw passion of flamenco.

Organized by the Town Hall of Odemira in the Beja district, the event aims to foster intercultural dialogue by showcasing the shared heritage of nine countries. Performances and workshops will span the parishes of São Teotónio, Zambujeira do Mar, and Odemira, offering free access to all attendees.

A Feast for the Senses

The festival began with a culinary deep dive led by Tunisian chef Ameur Bouchmel. The workshop, dedicated to traditional Tunisian flavors, targets local cooks and is part of the Fair of Economic and Cultural Activities of the Municipality of Odemira (FACECO). Complementing the food, musician Ziad Trabelsi will perform tonight, offering a unique fusion of Arabic musical traditions and contemporary soundscapes.

The weekend at the fairgrounds will shift focus to the performing arts with a series of high-energy contemporary circus shows:

  • Friday: “Rodeo” by the Andalusian company La Banda de Otro.
  • Saturday: “Embolic” by the Catalan troupe Cia Pau Palaus.
  • Sunday: “The Herock” by Spain’s Mr. Copini.

Global Harmony in Zambujeira do Mar

The festival returns on August 30 in Zambujeira do Mar for a major musical highlight: the national premiere of Luso 7Sóis-26. This multicultural orchestra features artists from Cape Verde, Réunion Island, Italy, Morocco, and Portugal, personifying the festival’s spirit of unity. On August 31, the ensemble will perform a special solidarity concert for the Cerebral Palsy Association of Odemira (APCO).

A Grand Flamenco Finale

The festivities conclude on September 7 with a dramatic reimagining of a classic. The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet will take the stage at the Nossa Senhora da Piedade festival grounds to perform “Romeo y Julieta,” translating Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers into the intense language of flamenco dance and music.

For over 30 years, the Sete Sóis Sete Luas Festival has operated through a cultural network linking 30 cities across Cape Verde, Croatia, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco, Portugal, and Tunisia. Supported by the Municipality of Odemira and the Directorate-General for the Arts (DGArtes), the event continues to establish the region as a vital hub for global artistic exchange.
