Cape Verde PM Rallies Blue Sharks for Argentina World Cup Clash

Cape Verdean Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho has hailed the national football team as “heroes” as they prepare for a historic World Cup Round of 32 clash against footballing giants Argentina this Friday.

A Campaign Defying the Odds

In a message released today, the Prime Minister extended his warmest greetings to coach Bubista and the entire squad, praising their “magnificent campaign” during the 2026 World Cup. The “Blue Sharks” advanced to the knockout stages after securing second place in Group H, remaining undefeated following a series of gritty draws against Spain (0-0), Uruguay (2-2), and Saudi Arabia (0-0).

Highlighting the team’s resilience, Carvalho noted that the squad’s performances were “unthinkable” to many outsiders. He specifically acknowledged the role of the Cape Verdean diaspora in the team’s success.

“Many of you are children of the diaspora,” Carvalho wrote. “Coming from many places, you personify on the field that resilient soul that has always known how to be greater than our geography.”

A Gift for Independence Day

The high-stakes match against Argentina falls just two days before Cape Verde celebrates its 51st anniversary of independence on Sunday, July 5th. The Prime Minister framed the upcoming game as a symbol of national dignity.

“On July 3rd, we will face Argentina. We will face this challenge with the grit and dignity that distinguish us,” Carvalho stated. “We wish our athletes courage, focus, and determination so that at the final whistle, we can all celebrate our great victory.”

As the nation prepares for its Independence Day festivities, all eyes will be on the pitch Friday to see if the Blue Sharks can pull off one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history against the world champions.
