Espen Eskas to Referee Portugal-Croatia World Cup Clash

FIFA has confirmed that Norwegian referee Espen Eskas will take charge of the high-stakes 2026 World Cup Round of 32 clash between Portugal and Croatia. The 38-year-old official is set to oversee the knockout encounter scheduled for Thursday at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.

A Familiar Face for the Seleção

This will not be the first time Eskas has crossed paths with the Portuguese national team. He notably officiated Roberto Martínez’s debut as Portugal’s head coach in March 2023, a match that saw the Seleção secure a dominant 4-0 victory over Liechtenstein during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

The Toronto fixture marks Eskas’s second assignment of this tournament. He previously officiated the competitive 2-2 draw between Cape Verde and Uruguay in Group H. Joining him on the pitch will be Norwegian assistant referees Jan Erik Engan and Isaak Bashevkin, with South Africa’s Abongile Tom serving as the fourth official. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) appointments are expected to be announced shortly.

Turning Point in the First 48-Team Tournament

Portugal and Croatia are vying for a spot in the Round of 16 as the 2026 World Cup enters its high-pressure knockout phase. This year’s tournament marks a historic shift for FIFA, being the first edition to feature an expanded field of 48 teams across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The match is set to kick off at 7:00 PM local time in Toronto (midnight Friday in Lisbon). As the tournament progresses toward the July 19 final, both veteran-heavy squads will be looking to local officiating experience to maintain order in what promises to be a physical and technical battle.
