Cape Verde World Cup Debut: Stopira Targets ‘Something Great’

As Cape Verde prepares for its historic debut on the world’s biggest football stage, veteran defender Stopira believes the “Blue Sharks” are ready to stun the globe. The 38-year-old centerpiece of the national team is confident that his country can achieve “something great” when the World Cup kicks off this month.

“The ambition is to work and prepare so we can do the best possible,” Stopira told Lusa. “I know we can achieve something great in this World Cup. I am sure we will dignify and honor our country with the greatest possible pride for our people.”

A Historic Milestone

Cape Verde punched its ticket to the tournament on October 13, 2025, after a dominant run to win Group D of the African qualifying phase. The achievement marks the first time the island nation will compete in the FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.

Stopira, the captain of Portuguese side Torreense, arrives at the national camp in high spirits. He recently cemented his legendary status at the club level by scoring the most important goal in Torreense’s history, securing the Portuguese Cup for the second-division side.

The Road Ahead: Group H

Under the guidance of coach Bubista, Cape Verde faces a daunting but exciting challenge in Group H. Their schedule includes clashes against some of the world’s most storied programs:

  • June 15: Spain
  • June 21: Uruguay
  • June 26: Saudi Arabia

A Potential Clash with Portugal

While focused on his own nation’s success, Stopira also shared his well-wishes for Portugal. Given the deep cultural and footballing ties between the two countries, the defender admitted he is keeping a close eye on the Portuguese squad.

“I wish all the luck to Portugal. It is a team I sympathize with because we have such a strong connection,” he said, before adding a bold hope for the tournament bracket. “I hope they have a good World Cup, and I hope we can meet each other in the knockout stages.”
