Praia Pledges €109K to Rebuild Fire-Damaged Market
The Praia City Council has announced a recovery package of 12,000 contos (approximately €109,000) to rebuild the Ponta Belém market and support dozens of local traders following a devastating fire that tore through the commercial hub on Sunday.
Financial Relief for Devastated Vendors
The blaze destroyed the livelihoods of 52 traders, incinerating 321 drums of clothing and merchandise intended for sale. To mitigate the loss, the municipality approved a direct subsidy of 25,000 escudos (€226) for every drum lost in the fire. In a further move to ease the financial burden on residents, the City Council also announced the full forgiveness of existing debts for all affected vendors.
Beyond financial compensation, the recovery plan includes a comprehensive renovation of the Ponta Belém market. Officials state the project aims to modernize the infrastructure and provide safer, improved working conditions for the community.
A Preventable Tragedy
While no casualties were reported, the structural damage to the market and an adjacent commercial and residential building was significant. According to local authorities, the fire is believed to have been sparked by three children who set fire to a mattress in the immediate vicinity of the market. The high volume of flammable clothing and goods caused the flames to spread rapidly throughout the stalls.
A Lifeline Interrupted
The loss of the merchandise is a severe blow to the local economy. In Cape Verde, shipments of goods sent in drums by emigrants living abroad serve as a critical lifeline. These items provide the primary source of income for many families who rely on market stalls to transform these shipments into liquid assets.
The City Council’s intervention aims to restore this vital economic link and ensure that the Ponta Belém market can return to its role as a cornerstone of trade in the capital city.
