Cape Verde Food Bank Collects 10 Tons for 1,000 Families
The Food Bank of Cape Verde has successfully collected 10 tons of food during its latest weekend campaign, securing vital supplies for approximately 1,000 families across the country. The haul will provide three months of essential grocery baskets to those in need, according to Ana Maria Hopffer Almada, head of the Donana Foundation and the Food Bank Against Hunger.
A Nationwide Effort
The campaign, which spanned roughly 30 commercial establishments, saw significant community involvement. “We are very satisfied,” Almada told Lusa news agency on Monday. While individual donations at supermarkets reached four tons, partner companies bolstered the total by contributing an additional six tons of rice and beans.
These supplies are currently stored in the organization’s Praia warehouse, ready for immediate distribution. While the capital saw the bulk of the success, efforts were also felt in São Vicente, where volunteers collected one ton of food. The Food Bank is currently working to expand its volunteer network and partner associations in São Vicente to match the scale of operations in Praia. The campaign is set to continue next weekend on the island of Sal.
Global Contributions via Digital Platforms
The Cape Verdean organization has also embraced digital outreach through the donation platform “Alimente Esta Ideia” (alimentestaideia.pt). This integration allows supporters from around the world to contribute remotely. Almada noted that funds raised online have already been earmarked to strengthen the food supply on the island of São Vicente.
A Decade of Impact
This weekend marked the 20th collection campaign for the institution. Since its founding in 2012, the Food Bank of Cape Verde has collected and distributed approximately 1,800 tons of donations, providing a lifeline to thousands of residents. The next major collection drive is scheduled for November.
