Stopira Hails Torreense’s Historic Season & Cup Victory
TORRES VEDRAS, Portugal — Even after falling just short of promotion to Portugal’s top flight, Torreense captain Stopira says he feels nothing but “enormous pride” following a historic campaign that saw the second-division side stun the nation by winning the Portuguese Cup.
The Torres Vedras-based club saw their dreams of reaching the Primeira Liga vanish this week after a 2-0 aggregate play-off defeat to Casa Pia. Despite the heartbreak, the 38-year-old defender remains defiant about the team’s trajectory.
A Historic but Exhausting Double Act
Torreense’s season ended in a whirlwind of highs and lows. Just four days before the decisive second-leg play-off, the club made history by becoming the first second-tier team ever to win the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup). However, Stopira believes the grueling schedule ultimately cost them a place in the elite division.
“It was a very positive season. I’d even call it a success because, while we didn’t get the promotion we wanted, we know we gave everything,” the locker room leader told Lusa. “The physical and mental load of the last few games weighed on us in the final match. While Casa Pia was resting, we were playing a cup final. It’s not an excuse, but it’s a fact that it penalized us.”
The veteran defender, who is set to lead Cape Verde at the 2026 World Cup, suggested that a slight adjustment to the schedule could have changed the outcome. “We could have played over the weekend to recover. We were fighting until the end, but the legs just weren’t there.”
Europe Awaits the Giant-Killers
While the club’s 34-year wait to return to the top flight continues, the “silver lining” is more of a golden opportunity. By winning the Portuguese Cup, Torreense has secured two massive milestones for next season:
- A spot in the National Super Cup against league champions FC Porto.
- A historic debut in the Europa League group phase.
“The club will do everything to ensure we can compete at both the national and international levels,” Stopira said. “I am sure the conditions will be created to honor the club’s name on the European stage.”
The Future in Torres Vedras
With his contract maturing and his status as a club legend cemented, Stopira expressed his desire to stay and finish the job of bringing Torreense back to the top tier.
“Torreense is more than a club; it’s my home and my family,” said the defender, who has spent two seasons with the “Scorpions.” “If the club wants me to continue, it will happen naturally. I want to help put this club where it deserves to be. It wasn’t this time, but I am absolutely sure that in the shortest time possible, Torreense will be in the I Liga.”
Under the guidance of coach Luís Tralhão, the third-place finishers in the Liga Portugal 2 have established themselves as a rising force in Portuguese football—ready to juggle domestic ambitions with a dream European adventure.
