Luis Suárez Out: Uruguay Reveals 2026 World Cup Squad
The era of El Pistolero has come to an end. Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa has officially omitted legendary striker Luis Suárez from the 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, signaling a definitive youth movement for the two-time world champions.
The 37-year-old Inter Miami star, who has been a fixture of the Uruguayan national team since South Africa 2010, was denied the chance to compete in his fifth consecutive tournament. In his place, Bielsa has opted for fresh talent, including Portuguese-based standouts Maxi Araújo of Sporting CP and Rodrigo Zalazar, who is currently finalizing a move from Braga to the same Lisbon club.
A Changing of the Guard
While Suárez misses out, veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera will make history. Currently playing for Estudiantes in Argentina, Muslera has been named to his fifth World Cup squad, making him the most-capped Uruguayan in tournament history. He moves clear of José María Giménez, who joins an elite group of players—including Edinson Cavani and Diego Godín—with four appearances.
Bielsa’s squad leans heavily on a new generation of stars playing in Europe and South America. The midfield will be anchored by Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde and Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte, while the attacking burden falls to Al-Hilal’s Darwin Núñez.
Road to the 2026 World Cup
Uruguay enter the tournament, hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as a contender looking to reclaim their former glory from 1930 and 1950. They have been drawn into Group H, where they will face a formidable Spanish side, a disciplined Saudi Arabia, and tournament debutants Cape Verde.
