PAICV Leader Francisco Carvalho Wins Cape Verde Elections
The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) has claimed a decisive victory in the nation’s general elections, with party leader Francisco Carvalho declaring an absolute majority early Monday morning.
Speaking to supporters at the PAICV headquarters in Praia at 12:15 a.m., Carvalho stated that the final results coming in from Cape Verdean communities in the Americas secured the mandate needed to govern without a coalition.
A Mandate for Change
Carvalho described the election outcome as a definitive turning point for the island nation. He emphasized that the voters’ choice reflects a desire for a new direction in national governance.
“Cape Verdeans have sent a clear message: the time has come to change the management of the country,” Carvalho told the crowd. “Cape Verdeans spoke clearly by giving the party an absolute majority.”
The declaration marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the archipelago, signaling the end of the previous administration’s tenure. While full official tallies are being finalized, the PAICV leadership expressed total confidence that the seats won abroad have pushed them past the threshold required for total parliamentary control.
About PAICV
The PAICV, one of Cape Verde’s major political forces, has historically alternated power with the Movement for Democracy (MpD). This latest victory suggests a return to prominence for the party on a platform centered on management reform and social change.
