Cape Verde PM Concedes Defeat & Resigns as Party Leader
In a major political shift for the Atlantic archipelago, Cape Verde’s Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva has formally conceded defeat following the country’s legislative elections. Addressing the nation on Sunday night, the outgoing leader confirmed he had reached out to his rivals to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.
A Shift in Power
“I called the president of the PAICV, congratulating him on the result and wishing him success in governing,” Correia e Silva announced. The victory marks a significant comeback for the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV), which will now take the reins of government.
Resignation and a New Role for MpD
In addition to acknowledging the electoral loss, Correia e Silva announced his resignation as president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD). After leading the party through the election cycle, he stated that the MpD would now pivot to serving as a “responsible opposition” within the National Assembly.
The outgoing Prime Minister emphasized his commitment to stability, promising a smooth and professional transition to the incoming administration as Cape Verde prepares for its next chapter of governance.
