Authorities in Cape Verde have arrested two Nigerian nationals following a major drug bust in the popular tourist hub of Santa Maria on Sal Island. The operation, led by the Cape Verdean Judicial Police (PJ), resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of cocaine and other criminal paraphernalia.

The Bust in Santa Maria

The arrests took place on Sunday during a targeted operation in the heart of the tourist district. According to an official statement from the PJ, a 28-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman were caught “in the act” on suspicion of committing high-risk drug trafficking offenses. Both suspects are confirmed residents of Santa Maria.

Seized Evidence

During the raid, police recovered 342.5 grams of cocaine along with chemical cutting agents used to prepare the drug for distribution. In addition to the narcotics, officers seized several items linked to criminal activity, including:

  • Multiple cell phones and electronic devices
  • A bladed weapon
  • Significant amounts of cash in both national and foreign currencies
  • Various objects associated with drug processing and sales

Targeting Tourism Regions

The island of Sal is the primary destination for international visitors to Cape Verde, and the town of Santa Maria serves as its main tourism center. Local authorities have been intensifying efforts to combat narcotics trafficking in these high-profile areas to ensure the safety of both residents and the archipelago’s vital tourism economy.

The two suspects remain in custody as the judicial process moves forward.
