Diaspora

The Cabo Verdean diaspora refers to both historical and present emigration from Cape Verde. Today, more Cabo Verdeans live abroad than in Cape Verde itself. As time passed, some adventurous souls set sail across the Atlantic Ocean, seeking new opportunities and experiences in distant lands.

In the Americas, they found themselves in diverse countries like Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Cuba, and the United States. These intrepid travelers brought with them the essence of Cabo Verdean traditions, sharing their music, delicious cuisine, and colorful customs, enriching the cultural tapestry of their new homes. In Brazil, the rhythmic beats of morna and coladeira echoed through the streets, blending harmoniously with the vibrant Brazilian culture.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in Europe, Cabo Verdean diaspora flourished in countries like Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Their presence added a unique flavor to the European lifestyle, as the aromas of cachupa and grilled fish wafted through the air during festive gatherings, introducing locals to the delights of Cabo Verdean cuisine.

In the heart of Africa, Cabo Verdeans found a sense of familiarity and kinship in countries like Angola, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Senegal. There, they shared stories of their beautiful islands, connecting with fellow Africans through shared cultural roots and experiences.

Despite living across continents, these Cabo Verdeans remained deeply connected to their roots. They celebrated their traditional holidays, danced to the familiar tunes of their homeland, and held their heritage close to their hearts. They formed tight-knit communities, providing support and camaraderie to one another while proudly preserving their Cabo Verdean identity.

Across oceans and borders, the spirit of Cabo Verde thrived within these diaspora communities, a testament to the resilience, warmth, and cultural richness of the archipelago. Their story became a tapestry woven with threads of tradition, love for their homeland, and a shared pride in being Cabo Verdean, no matter where in the world they roamed.

The country with the largest number of Cape Verdeans living abroad is the United States.
