5 must-see sights in Cape Verde
The nine inhabited islands of Cape Verde offer numerous tourist attractions, although the natural beauty and friendliness of the people are probably Cape Verde’s main attractions. We’ve chosen the five best sights for you – completely subjective and in no particular order.
Cidade Velha (Santiago)
It is the oldest settlement in Cape Verde and was Europe’s first colonial city in 1462. UNESCO has even declared the city a World Heritage Site. The Old Town impresses with its colonial buildings and the oldest colonial church in the world. There are also many other old buildings that tell the story of Cape Verde’s long history.
Sao Filipe (Fogo)
The capital of Fogo is the second oldest city in Cape Verde and is situated on a high cliff. The city is divided into an upper and lower town by a long square. It has magnificent colonial buildings and a pitch-black volcanic beach that can be reached by stairs – even if it’s only suitable for swimming to a certain extent, the crashing waves are impressive.
Pico do Fogo Natural Park (Fogo)
Also on the island of Fogo is the impressive volcano of Pico do Fogo with its natural park. Here you can get particularly close to volcanic activity. The highest mountain in Cape Verde attracts visitors with beautiful views, interesting hikes and breathtaking nature.
Mindelo (São Vicente)
Mindelo is considered the cultural capital of Cape Verde and offers not only a lively seafront promenade and colorful markets, but also beautiful colonial buildings and a charming old town and harbor. The city is also known for its live music, which is played in some bars at night.
Pedra Lume Salina (Sal)
Like the Dead Sea, you can pay an entrance fee to bathe in water with a high salt content in the ancient salt pans; showers are also available for a fee. A unique experience, even if the neighboring village of Pedra Lume has little to offer.
There are, of course, many other places of interest on the Cape Verde islands. The country and its various islands are well worth an extended visit.
